Chapter 3 — Blink Twice

Eliza unlocked the back door of her mother’s closed cafe. Rain tapped the window. She sorted the mail. One envelope had her name in her mother’s hand, stamped with tomorrow’s date. Inside: a key on a blue string and a note: “Do not let him in until the lighthouse blinks twice.” The lighthouse never blinks, she thought. On the headland, the beam died, then flared once. A knock sounded at the front, soft, then steady. “Eliza?” A man’s voice—familiar and wrong. The light flashed a single time. She gripped the key and stood very still.
